The first Championship Boerewors Competition Champion Round held on 11 July at Shoprite Checkers Office Park in Centurion was a fun-filled day for the whole family; however, the main attraction on the day was the sizzling excitement of the competition.
Three Champion Round winners were announced and they will continue and compete in the Top 18 round.
The three-winners, Leonard Mavundla (Soweto), Samson Mapoisa Mashaine (Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga) and Tshepo Molebatsi (Tzaneen, Limpopo) were all selected after rigorous blind taste tests by the judges.
All three received gift hampers from the sponsors as well as vouchers that can be used at Shoprite or Checkers stores.
The annual Championship Boerewors Competition is now in the Champion Round stage, with the first three events taking place on Saturday. The next three events will be held on 18 July. These six events are expected to see over 650 recipes nationwide to find South Africa’s Top 18 Boerewors recipes. These recipes will go on to contend for the grand prize; being crowned the Championship Boerewors winner for 2015 and a Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body L45.
This year has seen the format of the competition change and for the first time ever the public will vote for the winner during a Top 3 showdown.
The South African Chefs’ Association, a recognised food authority in South Africa, takes charge of the judging processes and makes sure that all entries adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors.
Shoprite Checkers is proud of their boerewors tradition and celebrates it every year by hosting the Championship Boerewors competition.
The supermarket chain’s butcheries are famous for exceptional meat products and the group is always looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer consumers the best in quality and variety.
The annual Championship Boerewors competition plays a pivotal role in helping the group to achieve this aim.
