Police at the Groblersbrug Border Post and Beit Bridge Border Post made a major breakthrough when illegal cigarettes worth R4,3 million were discovered during two separate incidents.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba reported that 17 750 cartons of cigarettes were found in a hidden compartment of a container carried by a truck on Tuesday.
“The value of the cigarettes are estimated at R3 692 000 000. The driver was arrested and the truck and container confiscated for further investigation,” Ledwaba said. He could not confirm when and where the suspect will appear in court.
In the second incident Police in Musina late on Monday afternoon arrested a 41-year-old man for being in possession of 3 135 cartons of illegal cigarettes.
“The cigarettes were hidden on a big trailer. The estimated value of the cigarettes are R623 000,” Ledwaba said.
The suspect was expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) on a charge of possession of illegal cigarettes.
