Most people know that an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist deals in matters of the upper respiratory track, but this field of medicine encompasses a much wider field of study.
Lorraine Masotja, local ENT specialist and Head and Neck Surgeon, explains that her medical expertise also includes congenital anomalies of the head and neck, facial trauma, tumours and growths as well as deformities of the face.
“When it comes to the ears, we treat hearing disorders, ear infections, balance disorders, facial nerve or cranial nerve disorders, as well as cancer of the outer, middle and inner ear or any growths in and around the ears,” she explains one of the aspects of her practice.
Masotja also says that care of the nasal cavity and sinuses is one of the primary skills of the ENT specialist. “Our services include management of diseases or disorders of the nasal cavity, sinuses, allergies, a blocked nose, and snoring.”
As part of this field of study, Masotja runs an Allergy Clinic from her offices at 57a Compensatie Street. She offers expert testing, diagnoses and allergy management plans to patients of all ages; a service much appreciated in a high pollen count area such as Polokwane.
Laryngology, a branch of medicine that deals with the vocal apparatus, especially the larynx, is also one of her specialities. Common conditions addressed by laryngologists include vocal fold nodules and cysts, reflux, and voice misuse syndromes.
“I also deal with diseases of the voice box and the upper aero-digestive tract or pharynx, including disorders of the voice, breathing and swallowing,” she explains.
Masotja’s responsibility as Head and Neck Surgeon focuses on infectious diseases, tumours and growths both benign and cancerous in the head and neck area, facial trauma, and some deformities of the face.
She also specialises in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose, and throat in children including some congenital anomalies related to the head and neck.
