Premier Stan Mathabatha has congratulated Limpopo born Kaizer Chiefs defender and Captain, Tefu Mashamaite for scooping three major awards during the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) End of Season Awards ceremony held in Johannesburg last Sunday.
Mashamaite nearly made a clean sweep at the event when he claimed the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season Award, Absa Player’s Player Award and Absa Defender of the Season Award
Mashamaite, born in Bochum 30 years ago, was instrumental in Kaizer Chiefs’s quest to retain the league which they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns last season.
Subsequent to the injury of Itumeleng Khune in August last year, Masha, as he affectionately known in football circles, became a major force in the team’s defence in all league and cup matches.
He played in all 30 league games, scored two goals, got only two yellow cards and scored the memorable winning goal in the MTN 8 Final against Orlando Pirates last year.
“We congratulate him for scooping almost all the awards, especially the Footballer of the Season Award. We are proud of him,” Mathabatha said.
He also commended Golden Arrows Captain, Trevor Mathiane for playing a pivotal role in helping his team to retain PSL status after they were relegated last season. Mathiane hails from Senwabarwana.
Mathabatha reiterated that although the province runs short of resources, it is doing everything in its own power to support its champs morally and otherwise.
“A time shall come, very soon where our teams, our champions, be it in sport, education, science and otherwise will not need to beg from other people. A time when we will be able to accommodate our children and compete against the world, and win”, Mathabatha said.
