Since its promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in May 2013, Polokwane City Football Club has never won any major title of the elite league.
The team’s management however believes the time has come to bring home a major title from the league and they have their eye firmly on the Telkom Knockout Cup.
The Limpopo based outfit will take on defending champions, Super Sport United at Wanderers Club in Johannesburg on Monday. Last season City failed to make it the quarter finals as they were knocked out of the competition by Orlando Pirates.
Media and Communications Manager for the team, Tumelo Makgoara said they have all the abilities to win the Cup. “We are more than prepared and we are confident that we can go all the way and eventually win the Cup. It is time that we win silverware in the league for the people of this province who have been there for us. We have adapted well in the league and we have played in other competitions as well and I don’t see us making an early exit in the tournament,” Makgoara said.
He also informed that the midfield maestro Cole Alexander, instrumental in the team’s success last season, was fit to play having recovered from long-term injury.
“He is back and he has been training with the team. We have also welcomed back Esau Kanyenda, George Chigova, Baptiste Faye from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Senegal respectively following the issuing of their work permits. We believe we have a strong team to challenge for major titles in the league,” Makgoara said.
According to the PSL the tournament, which will see 16 teams in the league battling for the R4 million prize and a trophy, will kick off on 30 September 2015 with the rest of the first round matches to be played on the weekend of 03 and 04 October 2015.
