Mercedes-Benz C-Class – the best knows no alternative

RC Myburgh

With its inimitable refinement and embodied sophisticated sportiness it is no surprise that the world thinks the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the best around the globe.
Recently awarded as World Car of the Year, the C-Class cuts an elegant figure and provides the ultimate in refinement.
With a breathtakingly beautiful face and an aerodynamic design for even more efficient motoring, the new C-Class delivers impressive driving dynamics by taking aesthetic motion to a new level.
The front end of the C-Class is an exciting mix of elegant design and innovative Mercedes-Benz technology, a case in point being the optional air panel for the Exclusive line, including a shutter that is opened and closed by a refined mechanism to optimise the aerodynamics in line with the current situation. Nowhere is the athleticism more apparent that in the wide rear end. It is as if the vehicle can’t wait to get out of the starting blocks with tail lights that follow the shoulder line and further emphasise the saloon’s sportiness. Getting behind the steering wheel of the new C-Class was an awesome experience. The luxury seats are comfortable and the layout of the dashboard is a feast for the eyes. A quick scan through all the settings and features was reason for brief confusion as to the whereabouts of the gearlever. The gear shifter is now located behind the steering wheel, where one would normally expect the controls for the windscreen wipers to be found.
The usual gearlever spot now hosts a touchpad. Gestures are the original form of communication and in the C-Class one or two gestures with your finger – a quick swipe or splay – is all the touchpad with multi-touch sensor system needs to understand what you want.
The touchpad is an integral part of the Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online system. It can even decipher the letters in your handwriting. The touchpad in the C-Class is the first ever to be able to control all the functions of an infotainment system based on gesture only.
Every one of the engines in the new C-Class is already driven by one form of renewable energy – the power of innovation.
The BlueTEC diesel engines with exceptionally low pollutant emissions make driving the purest of joy. In the case of the petrol engines, measures such as the combination of exhaust gas turbocharging with direct injection and an enhanced combustion process reduce fuel consumption and emissions so much so that the C-Class meets the requirements of the Euro-6 emission standard.
The diesel engine range consist of a C220 BlueTEC, C220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY and C250 BlueTEC with a power output of 125 kW, 120 kW and 150 kW respectively. For those who prefer petrol engines the C-Class come in a C180 (115 kW), C200 (135 kW) and a C250 (155 kW).
