Police intercepted two trucks and arrested three suspects for allegedly smuggling illicit creams and cigarettes worth R14 million into the country at Groblersbrug Border Post on Tuesday evening.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the two trucks had approached the border post from Botswana and were routinely directed towards the searching bay after crossing into South Africa.
The load bins were searched and 521 boxes containing various skin lightening creams and 30 cartons of illicit cigarettes discovered. The two trucks were also confiscated, according to Mojapelo.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has expressed appreciation for the work done by the members and the fact that their vigilance ensured that the illicit goods did not find their way into the South African markets.
The suspects, aged between 39 and 47, are expected to appear in the Phalala Magistrate Court soon.
