Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Secretary, Jossey Buthane briefly appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court last Thursday on a charge of common assault. The case was postponed to 23 September.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto informed that Buthane was granted free bail and warned to appear in court again later.
His appearance stemmed from an incident on 17 August when Buthane allegedly hit a University of Limpopo student on the head with a wooden object. The alleged victim, Mogale Mathete explained that on the day of the incident Buthane and several other EFF members had entered the premises of UL and allegedly disrupted some of the classes. Mathete, a member of the African National Congress Youth League and South African Students Congress said he and fellow students moved to the student centre to avoid confrontation but were followed by EFF members. During an altercation he was hit on the head with a wooden object, allgedly by Buthane. His hand was apparently also injured during the process to block the blow to his head. He was taken to Mankweng Provincial Hospital for treatment.
Buthane confirmed that he and other EFF members were at the university on that day but denied allegations of assaulting any students.
