Athletes from three prominent local clubs, Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR), Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) and Run/Walk for Live will over the weekend receive their goody bags during the annual goody bag event where athletes meet for the last time before departing for the Comrades Marathon to be hosted in KwaZulu-Natal on 31 May.
This year will see the 90th edition of the race since it was first run and 22 370 athletes have entered to take on the 87,72 km up run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. PRR Chairperson Colinda Potgieter said 21 of the club’s athletes will participate in this year’s Comrades. Athletes to watch out for are Jane Mudau who is expected to finish among the top ten women or at least be the first master female to complete the race. “We also expect to see a top ten position from Rufus Photo,” Potgieter said.
According to PAC Chairperson Corrie Calitz 114 athletes have entered the race.
“All eyes are on Pieter Pretorius and approximately 15 other athletes to bring back at least silver medals.
Run/Walk for Life athletes are also well prepared. Chairperson Kobie Marais said 12 athletes will be seen in action at the Comrades.
The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24th May 1921, Empire Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners.
