Two attempted hijackings, state car involved, police refuse to open case

Lesetja Malope- Contractors hired by a municipal service provider to detect water leaks were allegedly almost hijacked twice on Thursday night and police are refusing to open a case, this after not responding to several calls in the midst of the attacks. The contractors work at night when the water usage is minimal. While busy at the corner of Compensatie and Marshall Street they were approached by two white males who drove in a red Isuzu single cab van and were wielding galvanized pipes. The vehicles’ registration plates were printed in red indicating it to be an official state vehicle. The second and more traumatizing incident was at the corner of Dorp and Marshall Street when the two were approached by three black men in a Volkswagen Golf with its lights switched off. According to the contractors, the car appeared to be traveling with another one further up the street at the corner of Burger and Marshall Street. One of contractors drove up Dorp Street against the one way traffic in order to avoid a possible hijacking. He was followed by the men in the Volkswagen. Upon reaching Thabo Mbeki Street, he again drove against the traffic and was again followed until he managed to lose them. Two other members of the team were also tailed and mugged by two other men in the second car, which was parked near Burger Street. Meanwhile the team attempted to call the police more than four times during the entire encounter but could not get hold of anyone. Upon reporting the matter on Friday morning at the police station they were allegedly told a case would not be opened as the facts of the case did not amount to an attempted hijack. An Occurrence Book (OB) case was opened. They were also told the registration plate of the alleged government owned vehicle does not exist in the system. Police Spokesperson, Supt Moatshe Ngoepe said the management was not aware of the issue and the matter is now being investigated. “We are also investigating it internally and at the same time we are assisting the victims involved,” he said.
