The African National Congress Task Team investigating alleged manipulation and irregularities during local government election list processes might have to remain in the province longer than initially expected.
Mr Mbulelo Musi, Spokesperson of the team led by Home Affairs Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said investigation of the province’s 139 submitted grievances might necessitate the team to remain in the province for at most one more week instead of wrapping up tomorrow (Friday) as initially planned.
“We hope we will be done with the work this week though and at latest next week,” Musi said.
Of the province’s five regions, Peter Mokaba had the most submissions with a total of 45 cases.
Musi said the team will not be dealing with all the cases and may refer some matters to the Provincial Executive Committee of the party before the national comprehensive report is submitted to the National Executive Committee later in the year.
After Limpopo the team will head to the Eastern Cape. The other seven provinces were visited before.
Meanwhile National Government has announced that Dlamini-Zuma will be lobbied for the position of Commission Chairperson of the African Union, a position currently held by Mr Jean Ping of Gabon.
According to the International Relations Ministry Dlamini-Zuma already has the support of all the 15 country in the Southern Africa region.
“We believe that Dr Dlamini Zuma can build on the good work done by previous leaders as well as consolidate achievements made in the last ten years,” said Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
