Internal auditors should take care of their profession, advised Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa, Dr Claudelle Von Eck. Von Eck was addressing auditors and trainee auditors at a seminar at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on Thursday.

"This is a new chapter for internal auditors. They should move from backroom to boardroom and they should take a quantum leap to the next level. There is a need to build and maintain strategic alliances and partnerships. We want them to have a broader understanding of business and be sustainable. Working together everyone can achieve more. It is also important to enhance stakeholders’ relationships, build a relationship to the degree that we can understand each other because we in an era of volatile risk," Von Eck said.

She further encouraged her audience to obtain the highest possible qualifications in the field so as to secure and protect the interests of the internal auditors’ profession in South Africa.

"The profession is only as strong as its weakest link. The markets don’t know a lot about auditing so we must educate the markets. Auditors must be relevant and influential global players in the internal auditing profession. Develop the profession in the African continent, because the world sees South Africa the way it sees Africa. We must build and maintain strategic alliances and partnerships towards a broader, sustainable understanding," Von Eck said.
