Mall of the North and CatSnip Polokwane, a non-profit organisation focused on the wellbeing of feral cats, recently announced the winners of the Support Our Mall Cats competition.
Participants had to buy a raffle ticket at R100 per ticket to qualify for the draw that took place on 16 January. The competition ran from 1 September to 31 December 2016.
By humanely controlling the population of feral cats in Polokwane through a Trap Neuter Release programme, CatSnip aims to maintain the health of feral colonies, which has the added benefit of protecting domestic cats from the spread of disease during inevitable interaction.
All trapped cats are screened for feline Aids and leukaemia. If both tests come back negative, the next step is sterilisation or neutering after which the adult cats are released back into their territories and attempts are made at re-homing kittens.
The money made by selling raffle tickets will be used to take care of the feral cats around Mall of the North.
Chih-Hsu Shih was the lucky winner of the first prize, a professional photo shoot with a well known photographer from Pretoria worth R7 000. The second prize, a wonderfully stocked pet accessories hamper sponsored by VetSmart Mall of the North went to Timene Kartus-Watt who received her prize on Tuesday.
Shih is not currently in the country and will receive his prize when he returns.
