Great excitement rules among the organisers of the annual Ry’s & RE/MAX Skateboarding Competition to be held at the parking area of Mall of the North on 30 May.
One of the organisers, Leatitia van den Bergh from RE/MAX Northland Realty said this year will be the third year to host the competition and once again big prizes are up for grabs for those crowned as winners of the three categories respectively. Participants can compete in the amateur (open division), intermediate (14 years and older) and 13 years and younger categories. First place winners will receive an action camera to use in future to record all stunts and action on their skateboards.
Participants can enter from 07:00 on the day of the competition and the event will start at 09:00. “If the participant is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must complete the entry form on their behalf,” Van den Bergh said, adding that spectators can look forward to some exhibitions, food stalls skateboarding accessories and the ever popular bungee rocket with three different trampolines to have endless fun on.
Professional skateboarder, co-organiser and designer of the skating course for the event, Rynardt van der Merwe said this year could see a record number of entries as skating fever among the young has already escalated. “This year’s competition is definitely going to be a hit with an exciting course that will not only test skateboarders’ skills, but also provide ample fun. Though young skateboarders mostly enter for the competition, older skaters are also welcome. Skateboarding is one of the sports that lure all races and everyone enjoy what they do most in harmony,” Van der Merwe said.
Van der Merwe is an old hand in skateboarding and has been practising for the past ten years. He is also providing training for novices and even has his own course at home where skaters can practise.
