Register for municipal elections this weekend

This coming weekend provides an opportunity for South African citizens to register as voters for the municipal elections that will take place later this year on a date still to be announced.
Registrations will be done on Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00 and citizens aged 16 and older may register although only persons who have reached the age of 18 on voting day, will be allowed to vote. To register, a green bar-coded ID book or smart card ID or Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) is required.
A prospective voter only has to register once, provided that his or her address has not changed since the last registration or if the voting district boundaries of residence have changed.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) advised that details of registration may be verified by sending a SMS to 32810 with an ID number or to access the IEC’s website at www.elections.org.za.
In a media release, the South African Local Government Association (Salga) Limpopo reported that its member municipalities will ensure that all voting stations will have access to water, sanitation and electricity as well as access to roads.
“Municipalities have also committed to ensure that most of the voting stations that are municipal facilities shall be accessible by people with physical disabilities; and further that keys and access to the facilities are available on time to ensure that the voting stations for registration open on time,” Salga Limpopo said.
Salga Limpopo urged residents to verify their addresses with their traditional authorities and municipalities to ensure that they appear on the voter’s roll.
