The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday postponed the bail application of double murder accused Rameez Patel to 12 January.
Magistrate Janine Ungerer postponed the case because state prosecutor Mashudu Mudau was on sick leave and not able to attend court proceedings.
Patel stands accused of the alleged murder of his mother, Mahjebeen at her home in Nirvana in September. He also stands trial for the alleged killing of his wife Fatima in April 2015. Trial is expected to continue in January.
During the previous court appearance the case was postponed for heads of argument by the state and defence. During the proceedings Mudau also submitted an affidavit of a Police commander at the Polokwane Police Station as evidence that Patel allegedly made an attempt to escape custody on 3 November.
It was learnt that the commander received information from an informant that Patel is allegedly planning an escape and it was ordered by higher authority that he was moved to another holding cell and to be visited every 30 minutes.
The following day it was ordered that Patel be moved to Polokwane Correctional Services for the duration of court proceedings.
