Mall of the North (MoN) in conjunction with the Police and Polokwane Municipality’s Disaster Management Department demonstrated their readiness during a simulated cash-in-transit robbery conducted at the mall yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
MoN conducts regular evacuation exercises but according to General Manager Sumari de Ridder the Police also wanted to join in the simulation to practice procedures and protocol.
The scenario entailed a security guard from G4S being robbed inside the mall by three suspects who fled the scene in a white Ford Focus. The mall’s alarm was sounded and tenants and shoppers had to evacuate the building and proceed to the assembly points immediately.
The suspects who fled the scene also left a bomb behind. They were apprehended by members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) not far from the mall. The air wing, dog unit and bomb squad were also summoned to the scene.
De Ridder said regular emergency preparedness exercises are done to continuously improve on what is to be done in a real life situation.
