Cycling enthusiasts can not only look forward to one of the biggest pedalling events in the province, but also expect prize money worth R320 000 at the annual Mayoral Road Cycle Race to be hosted in Polokwane on 17 April.
Big names such as national winners Lynette Burger and Nolan Hofmann are expected to participate and local riders will have to give more than 100% to keep up with the leading riders.
Polokwane Municipality hosted the launch of the event at Protea Hotel Ranch Resort on Friday with Burger also among municipal representatives, organisers and acting Executive Mayor Sinah Tjale.
Organiser of the event Jaco Fourie said young riders are looking up to professional riders and that is why Polokwane is hosting the event which lures national winners as an inspiration for young talented local riders.
“In the female and male categories spectators can expect riders from teams Bestmed and Clover who will battle it out in the 96 km. Also available on the day will be a 45 km and 15 km race,” Fourie said.
Tjale said the annual Mayoral Road Cycle Race is parallel with the implementing of the Integrated Public Transport System to create an accessible environment for all.
“The municipality continues to seek and to promote opportunities for its residents to maintain a healthy lifestyle and we thank especially the organisers and sponsors of such events to strengthen us in our efforts,” Tjale said.
Entries can be done at www.cycleevents.co.za. No late entries will be accepted on the day of the race. Fees are R220 for the 96 km, R160 for the 45 km and R70 for the 15 km race. Entry forms are also available at The Bicycle Company at Thornhill Shopping Centre. Closing date is 13 April.
