Top golfers from around the world are expected to gather at a golf course in Waterberg for the inaugural Limpopo Golf Championship which will be hosted by Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and Sunshine Tour.
The championship which is scheduled for 7 to 10 March will see golfers teeing off for
R1,5 million in prize money.
The four-day golf extravaganza will feature 156 professionals competing in a 72-hole stroke play format and it is set to offer golfers and non-golfers an opportunity to sample the numerous tourist offerings of the region, venue and surrounding communities.
Chief Executive Officer of LTA, Nomasonto Ndlovu was quoted to have said they were pleased to host one of the biggest golf championships in the province. “Limpopo is a leading tourism destination but also well-known for a golf and game experience in Southern Africa. The addition of the Limpopo Championship to our already diverse destination portfolio is a natural fit. We are also excited that championship will be in Waterberg area because this is the region that has a myriad of tourist destinations like the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, a Ramsar Site with over 400 bird species, Waterberg Biosphere, Makapans Valley, Waterberg Meander, Marakele National Park and many private game reserves, to name but a few,” Ndlovu said.
Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, Nathan Selwyn, quoted in a press statement, said: “We are delighted to announce the new Limpopo Golf Championship, which is one of several new tournaments we will be announcing and which gives us a really strong local base for our professionals to start their year off at home.”
