A man was arrested at Ga-Sekgopo on Sunday after public violence broke out and four houses were set alight.
The suspect appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday and will appear again on 17 June while remaining in custody.
Tzaneen Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe could not provide the name of the suspect but reported that violence broke out when angry residents of Ga-Sekgopo accused three young men of terrorising the community through several criminal activities. “They also accused the men of allegedly killing a young man last week. The situation was calm on Monday but some community members gathered again on Tuesday demanding the release of the arrested man. Yesterday (Wednesday) morning things were still calm in the area,” Moatshe said.
No injuries or fatalities occurred during the ordeal but the houses were completely destroyed. Police are investigating cases of arson and public violence. Ngoepe warned community members not to take the law into their own hands.
