The Limpopo government and Friends of Cuba Society (Focus) are expected to play host to the Cuban Five at this weekend.
The Cuban Five – Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Laba?ino, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando González and René González – are expected in Polokwane on Sunday. They arrived in the country last weekend.
Limpopo will serve as one of the stops on their visit to five provinces. The five Cuban intelligence officers were reportedly arrested in Miami on 12 September 1998 and indicted by the US government on 25 counts, including conspiracy to commit espionage. They were subsequently sentenced to imprisonment, giving rise to ongoing demands for their release. In December last year a prisoner swap between the US and Cuba took place.
Focus Limpopo Chairperson George Mashamba, who is facilitator of the event, explained the Cuban Five were expected in Limpopo to, among others, thank various role players for their support while still in prison.
Upon arrival in Polokwane they are scheduled to be met by Premier Stan Mathabatha and representatives from Focus and relevant structures before a closed session and a meeting with the Cuban Brigade of professionals based in Limpopo. The visitors will then be off to the UL for a public lecture.
The one-day programme will end with a gala dinner.
