Convicted armed robber and cop killer Aretse Nkabang Moraba was sentenced to a total of 48 years imprisonment by the Polokwane High Court yesterday (Wednesday) after being convicted on charges of armed robbery, murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Provincial Police Corporate Communication Head Motlafela Mojapelo said Moraba shot and killed Police Constable Edward Kekana during an operation in April 2016. “Kekana was with other members in blue tracing Moraba, an armed robbery suspect, to a shack at Ga-Mogashoa in Sekhukhune. Moraba opened fire from inside the house and a bullet struck Kekana in the throat. He died on his way to hospital,” Mojapelo said.
Kekana was sentenced to 18 years for murder, 30 years on two counts of armed robbery and nine years for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The firearm and ammunition counts will run concurrent with the count of murder.
