City water crisis – No light in the tunnel

570

Following interruptions of water supply over the last week and the weekend, there is no light in the tunnel yet as the Olifantspoort water treatment works was stopped again this morning (Monday).
Communications and Marketing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo said that Lepelle Northern Water has informed the municipality that the plant was stopped due to excessive influx of muddy raw water and debris after heavy rains in the plant’s catchment area that may cause damage to the purification works.
“All areas of supply will be affected and reservoir levels are still very low following several stoppages from both Ebenezer Dam and Olifantspoort in the past week,” Mothapo said and could not estimate when the reservoir levels will be rehabilitated to such an extent that water supply to consumers will be restored.
Mothapo appealed to residents to use water sparingly and to forward requests for water tankers to the water helpline on 015 290 2376 or 015 290 2629.
