The settlement of Westenburg is on fire, as protest action erupted overnight after stirrings on the weekend and yesterday (Monday).
Access roads to Westenburg via the Matlala road as well as to Nirvana have been barricaded with rocks and burning tyres and law enforcers are on the scene.
Polokwane Municipality has just issued an alert about road closures due to an illegal protest. The message reads that the motive for the protest is unknown.
A source, however, informed Polokwane Observer that unrest was seemingly sparked by discontent over, among others, escalating rates, unemployment and a contract involving outside labour. Seemingly schooling has been interrupted as Westenburg had been cut off from the rest of the city.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed public unrest and said the Public Order Policing Unit was on the scene.
