Earlier this morning (Friday), Polokwane Municipality started to demolish shacks that were built on the farm Sterkloop adjacent to the Matlala road opposite Extension 76.
A large Police contingent ensured that the demolishing and removal of building material and personal effects of the inhabitants of the structures could proceed. A small number of bystanders, the majority apparently emerging from the neighbourhood, attempted to take claim to some of the property, but were stopped by the Police. A few former residents of the settlement that were on the scene when the eviction started, chose to remove their property by themselves.
Matshidiso Mothapo, Communications and Marketing Manager of Polokwane Municipality, confirmed that the municipality was enforcing a court order obtained on 5 September and that the contents of the court order were brought to the attention of the illegal occupants by the Sheriff. “Part A of the court order related to the demolition of illegal structures on the municipal land. Part B of the application in respect of prevention of further invasion will be argued on the return date (rule nisi) that is 13 November. Notwithstanding the order obtained, the illegal invaders persisted to illegally occupy the municipal land,” Mothapo said and added that the court order authorised the municipality or the Sheriff to execute it.
