Athletes improve seventeen records


The annual Janus Robberts Invitation Athletics meeting saw thirteen track and four field records being improved at Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) on Friday.
About 700 athletes from seven schools competed on the day with Tshego Ramaloka from Hoërskool Ben Vorster being named the top performing boy of the day with 1 029 points for winning the boys’ u.14 long jump with a distance of 5,79 m.
He walked away with a R1 000 cash prize. Evette Swan of Hoërskool Hans Strijdom also claimed R1 000 cash prize after being announced as the top performing girl with total points of 919 for discuss girls’ u.14 with a distance of 31,57 m.
The cash prizes are donated by PHS former learner and professional shot putter, Janus Robberts.
PHS newly appointed Public Relations Officer (PRO), Elmari Craig said the new records is proof of the high quality of athletes who participated in the event.
She said the gathering was for athletes to work on their performances and prepare for the season.
She further stated that six schools were invited while PHS had two teams in the competition. Schools that participated in the challenge are: PHS, Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naude, Frans du Toit High School, Hoërskool Ben Vorster, Merensky High School, Hoërskool Piet Potgieter and Hoërskool Hans Strijdom.
Craig indicated that the heat did not stop athletes from excelling in various activities and added that they were happy with the performance of all the athletes.
“The heat was terrible but luckily there were no major injuries recorded on the day. We wish all the athletes best of luck with their future endeavours and we believe they will do well throughout the season,” she explained. The new records are as follows:

Rinelda van der Linde from Hoërskool Pietersburg threw a distance of 32 m in the girls u.15 discus throw event.

Maggie Makwela from Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naude managed a distance of 25.28 m in the girls u.15 discus.

Gerhard Greeff from Hoërskool Pietersburg threw a distance of 10.01 in the boys u.14 shot put event.

Tyla-Reese Pretorius from Merensky High School participates in the high jump for girls u.14.
